FIGHT SUMMER LEARNING LOSS FOR YOUR KIDS -- AND HAVE LOTS OF FUN WHILE DOING IT!

You try hard all year to set your kids up for academic success during the year.  Right?  But then summer comes with those long, lazy days and all those 3R skills -- for sure -- are going to get rusty.  Just think.  How many of those skills will disappear over the summer break?

However, just a few hours of fun learning activities each week or two can reinforce those vital, reading, writing and arithmetic skills.  And with all the great online brain teasing games for all ages, believe me, you will have fun too.

Embrace on-line technology.  So many are free and offer fantastic games for the whole family to get involved. Adapt and apply in your own ways.  When starting out, make sure of the following:

  1. That you can navigate the site itself. Always try it out yourself first!
  2. Look for clear and well-explained instructions.
  3. Choose a level for each child, especially at the beginning, that each one will succeed at.
  4. Be liberal with encouragement and praise. Be patient when there are problems.  Always make sure your child understands one concept before proceeding to the next.
  5. Always select the right province.  This is important as school curriculae vary across the country from JK to Grade 8.

Math skills are the first to slip away and considered the most difficult to get back.  Here are a few websites with a variety of fun computer math games:

  • http://www.funbrain.com/ This site was created for kids ages preschool through grade 8, offers more than 100 fun, interactive games that develop skills in math, reading, and literacy. These games help students build on what they have learned in class and acquire new skills in reading, math, and problem solving. The playground helps parents introduce their preschoolers to the Internet and teaches them how to manipulate the mouse and keyboard.
  • http://www.schooltimegames.com Many of the games on this site are connected to the major subject areas students learn in school: social studies, science, language arts, and math. In addition, these games encourage students to build logic and critical thinking skills and express their creativity.
